chlo|rine «KLR een, -ihn; KLOHR-», noun.
a greenish-yellow, bad-smelling, poisonous gas. It is a chemical element, one of the halogens, which occurs chiefly in combination with sodium as common salt. Chlorine is very irritating to the nose, throat, and lungs. It is used in bleaching and disinfecting, and in making plastics, explosives, and dyes. Also, chlorin.
